What is the difference between Surf Stronger Vol. 1 and Surf Stronger Vol. 2?

Surf Stronger Vol. 1 is a total body workout that focuses on flexibility, endurance, strength, power, and core stability. Vol. 2 concentrates on the abdominals, back, and hips - core muscles that are essential to surfing. Both programs are surf-specific and train the body in ways that look and feel like surfing. Both videos offer excellent pre-surf warm up and post-surf stretching routines. We find that alternating the two workouts and surfing as much as possible yields the best results.

What kind of equipment do I need for the workout?

Our workouts require very little equipment and can be performed virtually anywhere - in your house, at the gym, in a hotel, at the beach! Surf Stronger Vol. 1 requires a fitness ball and two pairs of dumbbells. A yoga mat is also nice to have. Surf Stronger Vol. 2 requires only a fitness ball. A yoga mat is also nice to have.

What size fitness ball do I need?

Ball size is best determined by your height. If you are 5'7" (170 cm) and under, you want a 55-cm ball. If you are over 5'7" (170 cm), you want a 65-cm ball. Every surfer should own a quality fitness ball, which you can use for a range of exercises and stretches.

What size dumbbells do I need?

The Surf Stronger workouts are designed to maximize the use of your own body weight. Therefore, most people don't need much extra resistance. For Surf Stronger Vol. 1, we suggest two resistance levels:

  1. For men: One pair of 5 to 8 lb. (2 to 3 kg) dumbbells, and one pair of 12 to 15 lb. (5 to 7 kg) dumbbells.
  2. For women: One pair of 3 to 5 lb. (1 to 2 kg) dumbbells, and one pair of 8 to 10 lb. (3 to 5 kg) dumbbells.

Do I need a yoga mat?

While not required, a yoga mat is recommended. The workouts are performed while barefoot, and the mat provides better traction. If you are training with shoes, you don't need a yoga mat.

Why do you train without shoes?

Surfing is done barefoot or with booties, so it's best to simulate the actual conditions of surfing while you train. Doing the Surf Stronger workouts barefoot helps train your balance and develops an increased feel for your board.

I am just learning to surf. Are these workouts too hard for me?

Not at all. Both workouts offer levels of progression and exercise variations. Surf Stronger Vol. 1 incorporates dumbbells, allowing you to increase or decrease the intensity based on the amount of weight you choose. Surf Stronger Vol. 2 offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced routines.

How often should I do the workouts?

Most surfers will benefit by training with the Surf Stronger workouts two or three times each week. We find that if you are surfing regularly, two times per week is the perfect amount of cross training to help your surfing.
